Most Preferred Method of Facial Hair Removal from the Professionals

One of the most common questions I hear from clients is:

"What's the best way to remove facial hair?"

The answer depends on your skin type, hair type, and long-term goals. At Joni Ella Esthetics, I focus on treatments that support both comfort and confidence while helping women feel their best in their skin.

For many women, professional dermaplaning is one of my favorite recommendations because it gently removes fine facial hair while also refining the look and feel of the skin.

Let's compare!

Hair Removal Creams

Chemical depilatory creams may seem convenient, but they are not always the best choice for the face.

These products use chemicals to dissolve hair, and those same ingredients can cause irritation, redness, or stinging, especially for clients with sensitive skin or a weakened skin barrier. If fact I recently had a client come in with little burns all over her face from the "do it yourself" hair removal creams and for that very reason for the delicate skin on the face, I generally prefer a gentler approach.

Waxing

Waxing can provide longer-lasting results than shaving and does have its place in esthetics.

That said, facial skin is especially delicate. Over time, some clients notice increased sensitivity after repeated waxing, and I tend to be cautious with anyone who has visibly fragile skin or capillaries. I always want to avoid unnecessary pulling or stress on the skin when a softer option is available.

As skin changes with age, it naturally becomes thinner and less elastic, which makes gentle care even more important.

Where I Love Laser Hair Removal

Although I perform dermaplaning, I also believe laser hair removal can be an excellent option for many clients.

It is especially effective for areas like the underarms and bikini line, where hair is often coarser and darker. In those areas, laser can significantly reduce shaving, razor burn, and ingrown hairs while offering long-term hair reduction.

The face is a little different.

Laser works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle, so it tends to be most effective on darker hair. It is generally much less effective on fine blonde, gray, or light-colored facial hairs, which are often the ones most noticeable under makeup or in bright light.

For women experiencing hormonally influenced facial hair, including changes related to PCOS, perimenopause, menopause, or other shifts, laser may also require ongoing maintenance over time. While it can reduce existing follicles, it does not change the hormonal signals that may activate new growth later.

Why Professional Dermaplaning Is My Favorite

Professional dermaplaning is more than just shaving the face.

Using a sterile surgical blade, the treatment gently removes fine vellus hair, often called peach fuzz, along with the buildup of dead skin cells that can make the complexion look dull.

The benefits go beyond hair removal.

Clients often notice:

  • Skin feels incredibly smooth.

  • The complexion looks brighter and more radiant.

  • Skincare products absorb more effectively.

  • Foundation and makeup glide on more evenly.

  • The skin has an immediate healthy glow.

One of the things I love most about dermaplaning is that it improves the overall appearance of the skin while addressing facial hair at the same time.

An Unexpected Bonus: Beautiful Brows

Another benefit many clients appreciate is how dermaplaning can help refine the brow area.

Rather than simply removing stray hairs, I can carefully smooth around the brow bone and clean up the surrounding peach fuzz to create a softer, more polished frame around the eyes.

It is a subtle detail, but it often helps the brows appear more defined without aggressive waxing or frequent tweezing.

My Recommendation

Every woman deserves a treatment plan that is thoughtful and appropriate for her skin.

For coarse, dark hair on areas like the underarms or bikini line, laser hair removal may be an excellent option.

For facial hair, especially fine peach fuzz, professional dermaplaning remains one of my preferred approaches.

It removes hair that laser often cannot target, gently exfoliates the skin, enhances skincare results, creates a smooth canvas for makeup, and leaves the complexion looking refreshed and radiant.

That is why it continues to be one of the treatments I recommend most often at Joni Ella Esthetics, LLC.

After all, the best facial hair removal treatment should do more than remove hair. It should also support healthy, beautiful skin.
